#MotownMom: October 5, 2019 Local Orthodontist to Hold Screening Day to Donate $300,000 in Braces to Kids in Need (Screening day)

SCL_color logoFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Detroit, MI: Dr. Jamie Reynolds of Spillane & Reynolds Orthodontics, with offices in Novi and Rochester, Michigan, is stepping up in a major way to donate braces to kids in his community through the nonprofit Smiles Change Lives.  On October 5, 2019, he will be holding a Screening Day to screen all the children in the greater Detroit areas that are currently waiting to receive braces through the nonprofit program.

Smiles Change Lives is a national nonprofit that helps kids get braces who could not otherwise afford them. On average, braces cost $6,000 per child, making them out of reach for many hard working families. Further, orthodontic treatment has long been considered cosmetic by insurance companies, providing little assistance, even for those that are insured. As a result, many children and teens suffer unnecessary discomfort and embarrassment from their misaligned teeth. Smiles Change Lives’ mission is to provide these families with the opportunity to provide their children with braces through its network of over 800 volunteer orthodontists in the United States and Canada.

Dr. Reynolds has been treating kids through Smiles Change Lives since 2016. This is not the first time he has gone above and beyond to help kids in his community. On average, Dr. Reynolds donates orthodontic treatment to 8 kids per year through Smiles Change Lives.  With approximately 100 kids on the waiting list to be treated through the Smiles Change Lives program, Dr. Reynolds has committed to help clear out the wait list by agreeing to treat at least 50 qualified children, which is approximately $300,000 in donated services.

“The demand for our program in the greater Detroit area has far exceeded the number of orthodontists we have in our network,” stated Alexis Barclay, Director of Provider Services for Smiles Change Lives. “Dr. Reynold’s dedication to treat at least 50 of the children waiting to receive braces is truly life changing for these kids.”

In the words of a mother whose daughter recently completed treatment, “On behalf of myself and daughter, please accept our deepest thanks for a life changing experience for my daughter. She smiles all the time now and has a sense of confidence I’ve never seen before. To everyone responsible, please know that you have helped another child regain a huge part of herself back. She may go on to change the world in a better way now; just like Smiles Change Lives did for her.”

To qualify for the program, a child must be between the ages of 7-21, have good oral hygiene, not be wearing braces currently, have a moderate to severe need for braces, and meet certain financial guidelines (e.g., for a family of 4, their household income must be below $61,500, however household income limit varies based upon family size; the financial requirement is waived for children in foster care). The family must also be willing to submit an application fee of $30, and if accepted for treatment, a program fee of $650.  The full program guidelines can be reviewed at www.smileschangelives.org. Families interested in the event should contact info@smileschangelives.org to learn more.

To date, Smiles Change Lives and its network of orthodontists have helped more than 13,000 kids receive braces in the United States and Canada. Please watch this short video to learn more:

About Dr. Jamie Reynolds:  Dr. Reynolds received his undergraduate and dental degrees from the University of Michigan and his master’s degree in orthodontics from the University of Detroit-Mercy. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, Member of American Dental Association and the American Association of Orthodontists, and travels across the country and around the world for continuing education to stay abreast of the latest orthodontic technology and trends. Dr. Reynolds is one of the most renowned and respected authorities in orthodontics with an unrivaled dedication to philanthropy, education, and the advancement of orthodontic treatment. He is regularly interviewed by the media and has been featured in US News and World Report Health, Woman’s World Magazine and New York Daily News, among others. A “Certified Damon Educator,” the recipient of Hour Detroit Magazine’s “Top Orthodontist” awards every year the award has been given (2009-2018).  He lives in the Detroit area with his wife, Dawn, and their three children and can be found bumming around a beach volleyball court, trying his best at wake surfing and spending time with his family. About Smiles Change Lives:  Smiles Change Lives is a national nonprofit that helps families get braces for their kids who could not otherwise afford treatment.  Headquartered in Kansas City, the program has treated more than 13,000 children since 1997 together with its network of over 800 orthodontists. National Lazy Mom's Day - First Friday in September

NATIONAL LAZY MOM’S DAY

During the first Friday in September, National Lazy Mom’s Day delegates everyday mom jobs to someone else.

Busy moms know that the work of being a parent is never done. However, occasionally parents need to recharge. The laundry and the dishes will be there later. When possible, finding someone to watch the children for a few hours is worth it. Sometimes all a mom needs is a nap. Other times, mothers (and fathers too) seek adult conversation.

Even though moms around the country view this day in different ways, the majority see it as a day for moms to take a break. While the occasion holds no shine to Mother’s Day, may we suggest some cooperation with Mom? Allow her to take a break. Divide the chores. Place a moratorium on family feuds. That’s how most celebrate this National Day.

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalLazyMomsDay

You don’t have to celebrate like most moms do, however. Maybe it is a hammock and book kind of day for your lazy afternoon. Help mom celebrate this holiday by cleaning up after yourself. Rub her feet. Walk the dog. Mow the lawn. Put the dishes away. Pick up your dirty clothes. The list goes on.

Use #NationalLazyMomsDay to post on social media.

Hello Friends of Habitat Detroit
Habitat for Humanity Detroit is participating in the fourth annual Quicken Loans Community Challenge, a friendly fundraising competition where select charities compete to raise the most money. Participating Detroit charities are competing for $100,000 in grand prizes to help further their missions.

The charity that raises the most online during the Challenge wins a $25,000 donation for their cause.
Second place gets $15,000
Third gets $10,000
Fourth gets $7,500
Fifth gets $5,000

Our friends at Bedrock have created a team that is fundraising on our behalf and they are doing an amazing job!  We are only about $3500 from being in 5th place.  And, the best part of the Challenge is that even if we don’t win the grand prize money, we still get to keep the money raised during the campaign!!
The Habitat Detroit staff wants to be an example…as of today, we have all made a contribution to the mission of providing safe and affordable shelter for everyone.  Will you?
If you can’t afford to give, please share this post with your network. Campaign ends August 30th…thank you for your continued support!!
