The Belle Isle Aquarium was designed by famed Detroit architect, Albert Kahn, and opened on August 18, 1904. It is the oldest aquarium in the country and has served the Detroit community as a beloved attraction for generations.
The Belle Isle Aquarium is operated by Belle Isle Conservancy.
Thousands of Detroit school children visit the aquarium every year to learn about aquatic life and science.
The Aquarium staff has been an essential team during the pandemic, continuing to work daily to maintain care of the animals, manage facility improvements, enhance the visitor experience, and to continue education programs through virtual experiences.
New exhibits and facility improvements were installed while the aquarium was closed to the public. These will be shown for the first time during the preview.
